MEET OUR INSTRUCTORS

Jose Gouveia, Instructor

My name is Jose Gouveia. I am a full time art educator and a moonlight ceramic artist. I found my love for clay at the tail end of my studies as a Visual Arts major, while also trying to become a certified k-12 art teacher.
When finally I started my student teaching I was thrown into a pottery class – go figure! Knowing almost nothing about wheel throwing, I quickly made it a priority to learn how to operate this wonderful machine. I would throw after school, during my lunch break, early in the morning before school started, and started to become better the more I taught it.

Eventually, I moved to Southern Maine and started taking wheel throwing classes and attending workshops when I could. This helped me learn more about the artist I wanted to be, as well as experience many different styles of teaching. My most recent mentor helped spark my interest in decorative forms and the westernized raku process – a style of glaze firing that roots back to 16th century China. My learning forever continues through my successes and failures in the studio, through the art that is all around us, and through teaching in the classroom.

Megan Lowe, Instructor

Hi! I’ve always had a passion for anything creative. I spent much of my young adult life working with different mediums including acrylic painting, drawing, and oil pastels. I was first introduced to ceramics 6 years ago and fell in love with it, and have since made it my medium of choice. As you embark on your journey with ceramics, I’m most excited to see your unique artistic visions come to life. My focus as your instructor will be to help you achieve your unique goals in our 8 weeks together. I cannot wait to see what you’ll create.
